For the past five years or so, I’ve tried to post a monthly update on the projects I’ve been working on, checking in on progress and setting goals for the next month. There have been times when it’s been a lifeline, one of the few things keeping me moving forward on those goals. But in recent months, it’s only added to the pressure I put on myself—a public admission that I didn’t live up to my own expectations that month.
So, after thinking about it for a while, I’ve decided that it’s time to retire the ‘Sketchbook’ column as a formal, regularly-scheduled thing. It might come back in the future, but right now, it feels like I put more effort into blogging about the work than doing the work, and… that’s not really what I’m aiming for.
I’m still going to talk about my work. I’m just not going to talk about it when there’s nothing to say. (And I am going to include brief—very brief—progress updates in the monthly newsletter, so if you want to stay up-to-date, sign up!)
Here’s to focussing on what matters.
