Things are gonna be weird for a little while. Sorry about that.

I’m moving the site to a new host (more on that in a few days, probably), which means a new design (which is good!) and potential weirdness (which is… not).

I already know that some of the photos haven’t made the trip, and I’m working on fixing that. I know that some of the links are broken, and… well. When I find them, I’ll fix them.

In the meantime, it’s going to be a few days before everything is running smoothly around here. If you stumble onto anything that seems terribly broken, please let me know in the comments! I might know about it, but if I don’t, I want to.

Sketchbook #26

Looking back, I can split August into two distinct creative phases: for the first couple of weeks, everything was… slow. I was getting some work done, but not as much as I wanted, and I wasn’t really into any of it.

Mostly, it was because I had a week’s vacation scheduled for the middle of the month, and I didn’t want to get too deep into anything, only to lose my momentum. It wasn’t a conscious thing, but… I know that it was there. (It’s kind of a habit for me, and not one I’m happy with.)

That said: the vacation was actually helpful. I got out nearly every day to take pictures, and I’m really happy with some of them. (I’m still going through them all and editing the best ones. More on that soon.) I was able to spend some time thinking about my writing projects, coming up with some new ideas (and finding the story in a concept I’ve been thinking about for a while), and starting to make my plans for this year’s National Novel Writing Month. I also took the opportunity to reevaluate some of the productivity systems I’ve been using… or start to, at least. I revamped my to-do list, (finally!) found a pomodoro timer that I like, and I’m looking into a few other things.

And now I’m back, and the second half of the month has felt really creative and productive. I’ve been easing back into a freewriting routine that works for me (and coming up with a few scenes that I really like, even if I don’t have stories for them yet), and editing pictures, and starting to do the real work on the NaNo prep.

Or… I thought I was. I’ve been 99% certain that I knew what I wanted to write this year, and it was just a matter of doing the prep. I even broke it down step-by-step, so I can come up with an outline that works without getting freaked out at the amount of work that I need to do in the next two months. But then I suddenly thought that maybe I should rewrite last year’s story, since that’s been giving me trouble, and… ugh. Now I don’t know what I want to do.

Which leads me into the plan for September. I’ve got a massive amount of prep to do for NaNo, whichever story I decide to write. I’ve got photos to edit. I’ve (unexpectedly) got a website to migrate and redesign. I’ve fallen behind on my Project 365 posts again and I really want to get back on track with that.

It’s going to be a busy month.

And somehow, I’m ok with that.

Snapshot #84 | 10 Things for 27 August 2017

1. feeling… productive. I’ve been reviewing my to-do list setup and schedule, and… I think it might be working for me? Maybe? The whole thing’s still a work in progress.
2. making… ice cream. It’s been a few weeks. (This week: Rocky Road House, from the Big Gay Ice Cream cookbook.)
3. researching… web hosts. It’s time to move. Unfortunately, it was a lot easier to navigate this stuff… 14? 15?… years ago when I last had to think about it. This also means that things are going to be a little bit weird around here in the next few weeks… and I’m probably looking at a full redesign, just because.
4. editing… photos. I’ll be ready to share them soon. (Though… probably not until the redesign is finished. Maybe keep an eye on my Instagram.)
5. missing… pink hair. I might have to go back sometime soon.
6. putting… together a list of everything I need to do to get ready for NaNoWriMo. It’s… a lot of stuff.
7. rethinking… my running program. The C25K plan I’ve been following didn’t quite click for me, so it’s time to try a different approach.
8. thinking… of new ideas, and expanding old ones.
9. trying… not to get overwhelmed by all the things I have to do over the next couple of weeks and months.
10. wishing… the neighbour cat didn’t have to move. She’s awesome, and I miss her already.

Project365: #211-224

I’m still running a little bit behind on my Project 365 posts. Partly, it’s just that I’ve been busy (I can’t wait for you guys to see some of the pictures I took last week!), and partly… I’m still not sure that a one-week schedule for these roundup posts really works for me. A two-week—or monthly—schedule might click a little better.

I’m not sure. I’m still thinking about it. I’m going to be making some changes around here in the coming weeks anyway (long story), and that might be one of them.

Snapshot #83 | 10 Things for 13 August 2017

1. hoping… for good weather. It’s been so humid lately.
2. thinking… about a new feature or two for this site.
3. running… a day or two behind on my Project 365 posts… again. Grr. (I mean, I’m almost up-to-date. But not quite.)
4. getting… more and more frustrated with Pinterest every day. Not only are the ads getting more and more obnoxious (I don’t object to ads in general, but in practice these ones are seriously annoying), but they’ve apparently stopped showing my feed in any kind of order (so I’m missing new stuff and seeing old stuff over and over again), and, the last two days, it’s been impossible to pin images from anywhere but the site itself. It’s maddening.
5. finishing… my painting! I haven’t put it up yet (there are reasons), or even decided which way I want to orient it (the joys of abstract art!), but the painting itself is done!
6. looking… at new to-do lists and productivity systems. This is sort of a week off for me, so it feels like a good time to reevaluate how I do things.
7. taking… Lucy for her annual terrorize-the-vet’s-office visit. (They’ve actually said that she doesn’t need to come back next year. Unless there’s an actual reason, they’re perfectly fine with her only coming in when she needs to have her vaccinations updated.)
8. buying… that new camera bag I was thinking about. So far, I love it… the real test is going to be this week.
9. falling… out of love with Twitter. It makes me a little sad, but… yeah. I keep feeling like I should use it more, but I don’t really want to.
10. making… early plans for NaNoWriMo.
